Daily Energy and Stamina Gating in Play to Earn Games
Energy systems are an invisible throttle on every player in a play-to-earn game. Without them, token emissions would flood the market in hours. Two games made this mechanism central to their design: Axie Infinity and STEPN. Both use daily energy caps. They enforce them differently.
Axie infinity: energy tied to your team
In Axie Infinity, energy is a resource that regenerates daily. Each account starts with a base amount determined by the number of Axies owned. You do not get energy for free. You must hold three Axies to play at all, and more Axies raise your energy cap.
Energy is consumed per match in PvP. One Adventure or Arena battle costs one energy. When your energy is empty, you can still play - but you earn zero Smooth Love Potion (SLP) rewards. The game does not lock you out; it just stops paying you. This is the "daily energy depleted" state players see. Many players try to bypass it by creating multiple accounts. Axie Infinity's terms of service ban multi-accounting, and bans are enforced retroactively.
The system exists to limit SLP minting per player per day. Without it, a bot could run thousands of matches. Energy gating puts a hard ceiling on supply. This is the primary emission control mechanism.
STEPN: energy tied to sneaker quality
STEPN uses stamina. It works like Axie's energy but depends on sneaker NFT quality and quantity. Each sneaker has a base stamina cap. Higher quality sneakers yield more stamina per day. Owning multiple sneakers raises your total stamina pool, because each sneaker contributes its own cap.
Stamina is consumed in one-point increments per minute of movement. You cannot earn GST tokens if your stamina is zero. The game does let you move, but you get no rewards. This is the same lockout error Axie players know.
STEPN also caps daily stamina recharge. You get a fixed number of points back each day, regardless of how many sneakers you own. The cap is not infinite. Multi-accounting was a common attempt to sidestep this. STEPN banned accounts found running multiple profiles on the same device or IP.
Why energy gating exists
Both games need a mechanism to control token supply. Without it, bots would generate infinite tokens. Energy gates are that mechanism. They limit how many rewards one account can mint per day. This prevents hyperinflation of the in-game currency.
The system is not hidden. It is explained in each game's documentation. Yet players regularly try to break it. Multi-accounting is the most common workaround. It is also the most common cause of bans. Neither game tolerates it.
The daily energy depleted lockout
When a player runs out of energy, they see a lockout screen. In Axie, it is a message that SLP will not be awarded. In STEPN, it is a similar notice about GST. The lockout is not a bug. It is the system working as designed.
Players who hit this wall often create second accounts. This is against the terms of service for both games. Axie and STEPN both scan for multi-accounting patterns. Bans are not automatic, but they happen retroactively when patterns are detected. Loss of account progress and assets is the typical penalty.
What this means for players
Energy gating forces players to make choices. You cannot grind unlimited hours for tokens. You must decide when to spend your daily energy for maximum profit. This changes the game from a farming sim to a resource management puzzle.
The system also prevents the most extreme bot activity. A bot network with one account has a hard cap on earnings. Multi-account bots are detectable and bannable. No system is perfect, but energy gating raises the cost of cheating.
Both Axie Infinity and STEPN rely on these daily caps to keep their token economies stable. When demand for tokens drops, the caps still hold. Supply does not spike because a few players decided to grind 24 hours straight. The energy gate is the guardrail.
The Tradeoff
Players dislike energy gates. They feel restrictive. But these games need them. Without gating, the token supply would balloon. That would destroy the in-game economy. Energy systems are a compromise between player freedom and economic stability.
Neither game has removed its energy system. Both have adjusted caps and regeneration rates over time. But the fundamental design remains. Daily energy and stamina gating is not going away in play-to-earn games. It is the price of a sustainable reward loop.
